Systematic review software
An honest guide to tools used for evidence synthesis—by workflow stage, cost model, and what “AI-assisted” should mean in 2026. Pricing snapshots are dated; always verify on vendor sites.
Systematic review software is not one category. Screening tools, full review workbenches, enterprise audit platforms, open-source active-learning labs, and AI research assistants solve different jobs. Choosing poorly usually means paying for institutional features you cannot access—or stopping at screening when you still need extraction and writing.
AIPRA’s position: affordable, audit-oriented, end-to-end, with published validation—and human oversight required at every stage.
Tools by job
Institutional workbenches
Covidence — Cochrane-aligned screening through extraction/RoB; per-review or site license. DistillerSR — enterprise/regulatory audit trails (quote-based).
Screening-first
Rayyan — free-to-start collaborative screening with AI ranking; paid tiers unlock more features. ASReview — open-source active learning.
AI research assistants
Elicit and similar tools help discovery and extraction-style tasks; they are not always full PRISMA workflow managers. Evaluate audit trail and dual-screening support carefully.
End-to-end AI-assisted
AIPRA — question framing through writing with AI recommendations, free tier, Premium AI, and published validation materials for disclosure.

How to choose
- Check institutional access first. Many libraries subscribe to Covidence; ask your librarian before paying personally.
- Map stages you must cover. Screening-only tools force handoffs for extraction and writing.
- Inspect free-tier limits. A 500-record trial cannot host most real systematic review searches.
- Demand validation & disclosure support. The 2025 multi-organization AI position statement expects authors to cite performance evidence and describe human oversight.
- Prefer exportability. Your protocol, screening decisions, and extraction tables should leave with you.
